Team America  (25) v. South Africa (36)

At 8:30 Monday evening, the boys from Team America started anew at the World Rugby Classic.

The boys had their work cut out as the Classic Springboks were winners of the World Rugby Classic in 2004 and 2005. South Africa seems to have strengthened last year’s winning team with some of the countries outstanding players of recent years.

This was the sixth meeting between the Team America and the South Africa Classics with all games being held at the World Rugby Classic. Though there have been numerous close matches, the US has only defeated SA on one occassion. The 23-12 victory in 2003 is still one of the biggest upsets in WRC history.

Defending champions South Africa scored 17 points in the second half to pull away from Team America.

South Africa jumped out to a 12 - 0 lead when Jan Harm Van Wyk scored his second try of the night. Mike Stanaway scored a try to get America back into the match. Malakai Tabvuya scored the next try for TA closing the score to 12 - 10. Team America was back in it. South African Andries Fourie scored a try to put them up 19 - 10, but a drop goal from Tabvuya made the half time score South Africa 19 - Team America 13.

Team America scored just four minutes into the second half to make the score 19 - 18. But South Africa scored three consecutive times to make the score South Africa 36 - TA 18. The first try was scored by Van Wyk, then Tiaan Strauss scored and finally Adrian Garvey scored for SA. TA's Jason Raven scored a try for Team America on the stroke of full time to make the final score South Africa 36 - Team America 25.
