Singapore
– The US picked up from where they left off in Thailand last week by
scoring a first up win at the Singapore Sevens. The Eagles knocked off
a spirited Papua New Guinea side 26-12.
The Americans, playing
in Pool 5 alongside Australian club side Randwick and Kurumi, accounted
for the PNG Rookies in their opening match. The Galloping Greens
notched an even bigger win in their first game beating Kurumi 55-0.
Jason
Pye and Ron Rosser each scored two tries, Jone Naqica converted three
of the scores. In their second game, the Eagles pounded Kurumi of Japan
66-0. Among the try-scorers were Andrew McNaughton, Jeff Hullinger (2),
Naqica (2), Kevin Mongold, Marcus Respes, and Patrick Komongnan. Naqica
added two conversions.
The third pool match pitted the US
against Randwick and the Eagles triumphed again, this time with a 26-7
scoreline. The results saw the US top their pool at the end of Day One.
The
US team is coming off a win in the Cup Final last Sunday at the Bangkok
Sevens in Thailand. The young, new-look squad is in only its second
